5 ways to prolong the life of your sports bra

Things here in Australia have been a bit up and down this year to say the least. An economic life lived with Covid has proved good for some but not so good for many. Words like recession and unemployment are being thrown around more regularly.

Now we all know the importance of wearing a sports bra when exercising. They keep the girls in check allowing you to exercise in comfort. And to work effectively they need to be in tip-top condition. No stretch, no sag (just like your breasts!). A rule of thumb is a sports bra should not have a birthday.

But what if your favourite sports bra is about to turn one. Good sports bras aren’t cheap and buying a new one may not be on your financial radar. You just want to eek a few more months out of your current bra.

I am here to help. I understand that sports bras are an important piece of exercise equipment but also, they can be expensive. So, I have put together a list of my 5 ways to prolong your sports bras life.

1. Make some fit adjustments

Over time your sports bra can stretch. Often slowly enough that you do not even notice it isn’t giving you the support it once did. Your stretched bra feels the new normal.

Try tightening the shoulder straps. You would be surprised how many women set and forget and thus overlook this simple adjustment.

If your shoulder straps have stretched a simple adjustment may up the support. Just remember not to over-tighten!

2. Double Up

If you have tightened things up where you can but still aren’t getting the support you need, do the unthinkable! Yes – consider wearing two bras! There I said it.

I am a firm advocate (get it ‘firm’) of not wearing two sports bras. One well fitting, good quality sports bra should do the trick. That said, desperate times call for desperate measures.

If you have two sports bras in your drawer try putting them both on. If you only have one try wearing your sports bra with a regular bra over the top to help hold everything in place.

If you can afford to spend a few dollars, consider buying a breastband. It is a great addition to any exercise wardrobe and can be worn with your aging sports bra to up the support ante for not many dollars.

3. Wear one, one in the wash

If you are in the luxurious position that you own two or more sports bras rotate wearing them evenly. No matter how much you love one bra treat them as equals.

By rotating through them as you exercise, they will wear more evenly thus prolonging the life of all of them. Something to be conscious of is to plan your rotation. If you have one lower impact and one higher impact sports bra plan and wear accordingly.

Match the bra to the workout. Lower Impact for the gym. Higher impact for running. Not only will this help to prolong the life of each, but your breasts will thank you!

4. Do Not Wear Them Longer Than Necessary

Sounds simple but you would be amazed how many women go for a morning walk and then wear their walking sports bra for the rest of the day. I understand in our fast-paced lives this is often the easiest option. But it may not be the best for your sports bra.

Wearing your sports bra longer than necessary can compromise the fabric. It will be put under stretch longer than necessary which can cause the elastic to break down.

If you are able, take your sports bra off immediately after exercise and give it a rinse. Washing away both sweat and bacteria will help keep the integrity of the fabric until it is wash time.

5. Handle with Care

Sounds simple but once again you would be amazed at how many women throw their dirty sports bra into the wash basket. Then the washing machine. And finally (OMG) into the dryer!

This is a sports bra killer. To maximise your sports bras life, you should handle with care. Kids gloves as they say. Read the care label and follow those instructions.

Quick rinse and air immediately after your workout. Hand wash if you are able. Cold machine wash in a bra bag if you have not got time for hand washing. No fabric softener!

Air dry flat in the shade if you can. If this is not possible hang over the line. Do not peg by the straps as gravity will work against you once again.

Sports bra care is important, so take the time to care correctly for your bra to help prolong its life.
