The Best Sports Bras for Golf

Golf is a challenging game at the best of times. We all know it is very much mental as much as physical. You can hit the course fresh, fit and feeling great but if your mind is not on your game then you are already beaten.

Even if you manage to hit the course with your mind ready and your body willing there is something else we women have to deal with…our chests!

The Perfect Sports Bra?

The perfect sports bra for golf needs to stop all that bouncing distracting us from the perfect swing (is there such a thing!). As far as I am concerned looking good on the tee comes a distant second to keeping my girls under control. Allowing me to hit the cover off the ball!

Hitting the cover off the ball requires the perfect combination of head, arms, shoulders and hips working together in perfect harmony. My breasts wobbling all over the place is definitely not part of that harmony. I want to focus on my drive not worry about what might fall out after every drive.

Golf is played best when you are relaxed and able to breathe freely and deeply. A sports bra that feels like a boa constrictor around my chest is not the answer. This provides a unique challenge for a sports bra. The perfect sports bra will control my girls enough to allow me to swing freely and breathe easily.

It’s as Easy as One, Two, Three

One, and most importantly, you need control and support. The perfect golf sports bra keeps the girls under control without squashing them against your chest. I find a bra that offers full coverage with medium to high impact support works well (especially for those with bigger chests). You can find out more about impact levels in my blog ‘Sport Bra Impact Levels – What Do They Mean?’

There is a school of thought that compression sports bras are best as they squash the girls out of the way allowing you to swing more freely. I would argue that the discomfort caused by squashed boobs over 18 holes outweighs the benefits. If you sit in the A-D cup range, then a compression sports bra may be suitable but not if you are D+ cup. A full coverage sports bra will benefit you more.

Two, comfort is also key. A full 18 holes can mean a lot of time on your feet (especially if you ditch the buggy) and you want to be comfortable. I find soft, cooling styles work best. You want a sports bra that is made from technical fabrics that wick sweat away from your skin keeping you cool and comfortable.

I also find wirefree styles work best. During a full-blooded tee shot your breasts move in all directions. As such you don’t want to be continually adjusting your underwire out on the course.

Three, to get the most out of your swing freedom is important. Especially in your arms and shoulders. The sports bras for golf are racerback or convertible style. Keeping the straps away from your arms allowing you to swing freely.

You may be able to get away with regular straps but to totally free your swing and to also prevent the annoyance of slipping straps I find racerback is best.
