How to Prevent Sports Bra Straps From Falling Down

How to Prevent Sports Bra Straps from Falling Down

It is the bane of many active women. You are working hard and getting into your workout groove only to be interrupted by a rouge sports bra strap. You lift it up, it falls back down. Talk about a workout rhythm killer.

So how do you prevent your sports bra straps from falling? It is a question that has been asked by almost all women at some point. And a question I will help answer in this article.

I’ll take a look at some of the common causes to strap slippage and offer some solutions to make slipping straps a thing of the past.

Common Reasons Straps Slip

We do a lot of bouncing around when we workout and our beloved sports bras are meant to control that bounce. 20% of the bounce control comes from the straps so keeping them up is important for our breasts as well as our workout.

There are a few possible causes of strap slippage.

1 Your straps are too loose. Either because they are not adjusted correctly or because they have worn and stretched over time. If they are simply too loose, adjust them. Tighten them so that you can comfortably fit two fingers underneath. My article ’10 common sports bra fitting problems and how to solve them’ will help. If they are stretched, it’s time to go shopping. Remember a sports bra should never have a birthday!

2. Your shoulders are narrow or sloped. Having sloped or narrow shoulders makes your straps more prone to slipping. Now there is not much we can do about genetics but wearing a sports bra with the straps set a bit closer together can help solve the problem. These are often referred to as ‘leotard straps’. Styles where the straps crossover at the back work best. Try a racerback style or one where the straps convert to cross over.

3. You are wearing the wrong style. We are all different and not every style suits every woman. Just because your friend recommends her awesome bra does not mean it will suit you. Narrow shoulders are best suited to styles where the straps are set closer together. Racerback styles put the straps closer to the neck and criss-cross styles also help prevent the straps from slipping down.

4. Your band is too big, or you are wearing a bra band extender. This sets the straps wider apart than they are designed to be causing a slippage issue for some people. A band that is too big also tends to ride up at the back causing your straps to become loose. The obvious solution is to buy a sports bra with the band in your correct size.

5. Your bra is too old. As mentioned earlier, your bra may simply be worn out. Meaning it just does not perform the job it once did. About the only thing that can be done in this case is to put your bra into retirement and employ a new model.

A Wider Strap May Help

It’s simple physics really. A sports bra with wider straps may stay in place better than one with thin straps. Because the weight of your breasts is distributed over a larger surface area. Technical!

So, it is worth looking at styles with wider straps in your battle against strap slippage.

Are Bra Clips an Option?

If your present bra ticks all the boxes except the slippage one. And you are not ready to part ways with it a bra clip may help.

These simple devices turn a regular strap bra into a racerback style to position the straps closer to your neck. The position and inward pulling action of the clip also helps keep the straps from slipping.

Bra clips come in a variety of designs and are a much more affordable option as compared to a new bra. To put them on you should loosen your straps first as the clip will tighten them. Simply attach the clip to one strap then the other to ‘clip’ them together. Adjust your strap tightness to suit.

If you are quite tall in the body you may find the bra straps will not be long enough to also add a clip.  In this instance you are better off looking for a bra that is already designed with crossover straps.

Try a Bra Strap Holder

These work in a similar way to bra clips but are usually made of elastic and are adjustable. Like a bra strap!

They allow you to customise your fit. Tightening or loosing as required until they are exactly right for you.

If you do decide to try a bra clip or strap holder please give them a test before heading out on a long distance run.  You want to ensure they don’t cause any rubbing when you get hot and sweaty.

My Final Thoughts

Strap slippage is a common complaint from many women but one that can be easily solved. Following my guide above will help you make strap slippage a thing of the past.

Remember, there is no substitute to a great fitting bra, so it is well worth taking the time to find the solution that best suits you. If you only option is to go new, then please check out my range of awesome sports bras and get back to exercising without slippage distraction!
