4 Reasons to Wear a Bra Band Extender

4 Reasons to Wear a Bra Band Extender

As someone who obsesses about finding the perfect bra fit for myself and my customers a bra band extender is not something I would normally recommend. A sports bra either fits or it doesn’t, right? Not necessarily…

As is always the case there are exceptions to every rule. A bra band extender may not suit everyone but for some it can be a lifesaver!

What are Bra Band Extenders?

Before we go any further let’s make sure we are all on the same page here.

The name pretty much says it all. Bra band extenders are exactly that, a small item that extends the length of your bra band. Woah!

They are small square or rectangular pieces of fabric with hooks and eyes that attach to your bras hooks and eyes to extend the band length. They come in various sizes and colours to match the bra they are fitting.

Why Would You Use One?

As I said earlier a good fitting sports bra should not need an extender. I firmly (get it?) believe most of us ladies do not need one.

However, a few of us will fall into one of the four categories below. And for those that do a band extender can make the difference between a good fit and no fit at all.

#1 You are in Between Sizes

If the sports bra you love falls in the goldilocks zone – the smaller band size is a little too tight and the larger band size is a little too big – then a bra band extender can make the band fit ‘just right’.

Buy the smaller banded bra and use the band extender to find the perfect fit for you. Most come with 2 or 3 columns of eyes so you can adjust its position and your band length if your size changes.

If you size changes such that the band extender is pushed to its limit it can compromise the effectiveness of your sports bra. If this is you, it’s time to go shopping for a new sports bra.

#2 You Experience Weight Fluctuations

Many of us experience weight fluctuations for a variety of reasons. The most common being at ‘that time of the month’. The extra bloating can make our sports bras feel way too small.

Your trusty band extender to the rescue! Use it for a few days to get you through and pop it back in the drawer when things return to normal. Just make sure you still have plenty of support.

#3 You are Pregnant

You will find that most maternity sports bras are designed with a little more adjustment in the band with extra columns of ‘eyes’ to allow for changes.

That said it is a good idea to keep a band extender on hand just in case your maternity sports bra doesn’t fully accommodate your changes.

Many women find it more comfortable to sleep in wirefree maternity bras. With your bra band extender attached it will offer you a little more comfort along with the added support during the night.

#4 Your Sports Bras Have Shrunk or Stretched!

If this has happened to you the first thing I would suggest, is to go shopping! You should never compromise on support and if your sports bra has been compromised it is time to get a new one.

That said I understand finding a new sports bra takes time and a bra band extender may be just the stop gap you need to get you through until your new sports bra arrives.

So, there you have it everything you need to know about bra band extenders and why you might need one.
