With schools recommencing very soon I was hoping to write this article for you a little earlier than I have. I must apologise but what a couple of weeks it has been. Sick kids and then sick me has put a stop to that. The only one holding up the fort was hubby!
Anyway, I am back on deck now and with only one sick child on the couch I am almost through this. So, time to put fingers to keyboard. As this is an article, I think important for all mothers of teenage daughters.
When we think back to school we think of stationary, uniforms and BYOD devices. But do any of us think sports bras? My daughter is only 11 so it is not something I think of yet. That said it is something I wish my mum had thought of when I was at school (sorry mum!).
Girls seem to be developing younger and younger. And are more and more active with the myriad of sports on offer to them. As such, we as mothers need to ensure our daughters are properly supported throughout all activity.
Developing Breasts Need Support
Now I know all breasts need support right! Yes, that is true but even more so for young and developing breasts. Girls develop at different ages and at different rates but the one thing they have in common is it is advisable to support them through this period. Especially during physical activity to stop the bounce and any pain associated with it.
A sports bra can help protect developing breasts. We all know our breasts can be sensitive, and we may also remember the heightened sensitivity we experienced during puberty. As such, any support we can offer our daughters during this period will be appreciated. Maybe not by them (they do know it all after all!) but definitely by their breasts.
A Good Sports Bra Can Boost Confidence
I recently read an article that stated that up to 1/3 of girls avoid exercise because of their breasts. Wow! They often feel self-conscious and lack confidence due to concerns ‘everyone is looking’. Many mums struggle to get their daughters moving at the best of times without their breasts getting in the way.
Given how important exercise is a young girls physical and mental development it is important to remove this barrier. Not just for teenage girls but for all women.
A good fitting sports bra will not only keep the girls under control removing the ‘everyone is looking’ concern. It will also help support our daughters boosting their self-confidence and willingness to participate in sporting activities.
We all know it is the classic positive feedback loop. Get our daughters feeling good about themselves. They then participate more, become more active and feel healthier. From which they feel better about themselves. And so, it goes on.
The Best School Sports Bras
As is always the case there is no one sports bra suits all solution. Every girl is different in both her body and the activities she does. It is well worth reading my sister article ‘Sports bras are a must for active teens’ for a list of things to consider when buying a sports bra for your daughter. It’s pretty simple; soft, supportive, wirefree styles.
Such styles will not only support her comfortably but can be worn all day avoiding the need to get changed before activity.
