Best Supportive Sports Bras

Hi, it is Amy here from Sports Bras direct. Today I want to talk to you about supportive sports bras. And in particular, the best supportive sports bras.

We all know the job of a sports bra is to support you. It is its primary function. If your sports bra doesn’t support you, it is letting you down!

In this article I will help you understand why you need a supportive sports bra. How to easily find the support level of a sports bra. What the best supportive sports bras are. And what the most supportive sports bras are (there is a difference).

Read on as I delve into the world of supportive sports bras.

Why You Need a Supportive Sports Bra.

The answer to this statement is obvious – to hold you up! Or more correctly to keep your breasts in position. Holding you up is not enough as upward bounce is just as important to control as downward bound. Make sense?

Simply put, when we exercise our breasts move in all directions, up – down, in – out, side to side. And we need to arrest this movement of out chest to reduce possible breast pain and long-term breast damage.

The right supportive sports bra will do just that. Sounds simple right? Buy a supportive sports bra and problem solved? If only it was that easy.

All sports bras support you, but did you know the level of support provided can vary. The way this is measured is called ‘impact level’. And it is measured on a scale of low – medium – high. With extreme a more recent addition.

As you may have guessed low impact sports bras provide a low level of breast support. With extreme impact sports bras offering the highest level of support. My article ‘Sports Bra Impact Levels – What do They Mean?’ sheds more light on this subject.

Simply match the impact level with the level of breast bounce your intended activity creates and you are away. Yoga = low breast bounce = low impact. Golf = medium breast bounce = medium impact. Dance = high breast bounce = high impact. Running = extreme breast bounce = extreme impact.

If ever you are unsure always go up an impact level to ensure your breasts have the support, they deserve. Also, if you have a bit more up top then consider going up an impact level. Finally, as you age things inevitably start to head South so consider a higher impact level to assist your girls ailing natural support.

How to Easily Find the Support Level of a Sports Bra?

The best place to start is the tags. Any sports bra worth its salt will state the impact level on the label. Or is should. Unfortunately, for many sports bras this is not always the case. So, what do you do?

If you are in store, ask the assistant. Fingers crossed they will know or at least can find out. If they seem unsure, then assume the worst. Your breasts will thank you.

If you intend to shop online, it should be a lot easier. Any website of substance should tell you. A quick glance at the product description should inform you of the support level. If it doesn’t, hey I did say ‘any website of substance’, look for another website. I’d try Sports Bras Direct!

Support level can occasionally come in other forms. Berlei use Support Factor (SF) to denote the support level of their sports bras. SF1, SF2, SF3 & SF4. Low to extreme support. Same principal, different way of display.

Occasionally you may come across bounce control measured as a percentage. Some brands test their styles in a controlled environment and display the reduction in breast bounce observed as a percentage. You might see something like this ‘83% bounce reduction’. The higher the percentage the better the support.

The Best Supportive Sports Bras

So, we now have a thorough understanding of sports bra support and how it is measured. Time to get to the nitty gritty and answer – what are the best supportive sports bras?

Before we do, we need to know how this list was compiled. What factors were used to determine the results? First and primarily, the level of support offered. Good support is what we are after. Secondly, how comfortable the bra is. There is no point having all the support in the world if the sports bra isn’t comfortably. Finally, the range of sizes the sports bra is available in. This is important as we come in a variety of sizes, and all deserve the best support.

So, here it is my best supportive sports bras list. These are in no particular order.

You may have noticed that all of these sports bras are wirefree. ‘Aren’t underwired sports bras more supportive?’ you ask. Not in the modern sports bra world. Many wirefree styles are as supportive, if not more so, than their underwired counterparts. And you guessed it; I find wirefree sports bras more comfortable than underwired styles. Personal preference I know. But hey, why include something that can cause irritation and rub.

The Most Supportive Sports Bras

I am guessing you are thinking, haven’t we already seen this list? Yes and no. Yes, you have seen a list of the ‘best’ supportive sports bras as measured using three metrics. No, these aren’t necessarily the most supportive sports bras.

What list do you get if you remove two of my metrics, comfort and size range? And focus purely on the most supportive sports bras.

Here is that list with highest brand stated percentage first. It only includes styles that have been tested in such a way.
